Investment Basics

The money you have in your superannuation account is invested for you in the options you nominate in a tax effective way to provide you with an income once you retire.

It is important to remember that there is a relationship between investment risk and investment return. Investments with the potential to earn the highest returns normally carry the highest risk of making a loss over the short term.

So things you should consider when developing your investment strategy should include:

  • the amount of time remaining until your retirement,
  • the level of investment return you are hoping for, and
  • the amount of risk you are willing to take with your retirement savings.

Most funds will let you choose your own investment strategy and to do this you should be able to answer the questions above in order to invest at a suitable risk level.

A qualified financial planner can also provide help to examine the range of investment options and advise what suits you best.
